Want to Transform Your Results Manage Your Emotions

Want to Transform Your Results Manage Your Emotions A  few short years ago, if anyone in the business world suggested that how you managed your own and others emotions had a direct impact upon the results you and the business were getting, they would have been laughed at. It was all about action, action, action and drive, drive drive! None of this emotional rubbish â€" far too touchy feely for us hardened business people! Boy, but how that has changed! And, the truth is, those who have really got it have seen the impact of embracing this approach. Emotional intelligence: Since Daniel Goleman started to gain prominence with his work on Emotional Intelligence in the 90s, we have come to realize and recognize the direct correlation of emotional maturity and sustainable business results. My own experience of working with clients on developing emotional intelligence in their businesses has been fascinating. I have seen first hand how effective development of emotional intelligence has really helped CEOs to become more effective leaders, and management teams become more effective at delivering results. This improvement has not been just small incremental changes, they have been really significant. When their emotional intelligence has been assessed and reviewed, so often it has been a real aha moment, and those that embrace the output and do something about it, really do start to operate at a different level altogether. It is truly transformational! When managers really begin to understand how emotional intelligence works and how it contributes to outstanding individual performance, it just takes off in an organization. But don’t just take my word for this phenomenon! Research undertaken by Martin Seligman, considered by many as one of the leading modern psychologists, proved that insurance agents who had learned to manage their own emotions, outsold those who had not, by 8% in the first year and 31% in their second year. That’s fine, say you, that is key to a salesperson â€" but would it make any difference to a non sales, non customer facing, or technical role? The answer is a resounding â€" YES. Increasing emotional intelligence improves performance even in the most high tech of situations. In fact, Goleman did a study in the technology sector and his findings were that the top 6 competencies that separate the star performers from the average are â€" and they are in this order, and the order is important: Strong achievement drive and high achievement standards Ability to influence Conceptual thinking Analytical ability Initiative on in taking on challenges Self-confidence. When you look at that list only conceptual thinking and analytical ability can be described as intellectual competencies. The rest, and including the top 2, have everything to do with emotional competency. So, for those who need hard-nosed research and data, well, it supports my statement that your managers, and you, can really shift a gear in terms of performance and sustained delivery of goals, if attention is paid to the development of emotional intelligence. Would you welcome a step change in your results? Well, contact us here, and we will start that conversation that will lead to a change in behavior, thereby delivering improved results â€" year after year!

Office Fashion Etiquette Must Gen Y Wear Pantyhose to the Office

Office Fashion Etiquette Must Gen Y Wear Pantyhose to the Office OK, I think it is time that  you helped me  adequately address this heated question on office pantyhose. I found some arguments on this debate  from a few of my  favorite blogs  but I would love to hear your thoughts also! These days, is pantyhose in the office appropriate or outdated? Office Appropriate Jen at MBAchic recently posted that you should. I know you probably only see your mom, aunts, or old ladies wear them, but for these interviews, you want to wear them. Think: they may not be for you, but not too long ago, it was completely unheard of for women to leave the house without this undergarment. The majority of your potential employers are probably not your age, and for them, pantyhose is just a part of life. You do not want to give a senior partner in the accounting firm any reason to judge (or misjudge) you. [RELATED: 5 Days of Office Style on a Budget] Outdated CCG: When I entered the career world out of college, I thought that pantyhose were a must! I wore them to interviews and on the job.   I even wore knee highs with pants because I thought I would look more professional and mature. I realized a few months in that not only were they terribly uncomfortable but most women (of all ages) I was working with were not wearing them. Today, I very rarely see anyone wearing pantyhose. I think times are changing and it isnt looked down upon anymore to NOT wear pantyhose. Disclaimer: I live in San Diego and things tend to be a little more relaxed than other places such as New  York and DC. It Depends Sarah Shah  responded to  my question on Twitter and sent me a link to an article she had written on the topic that says,  The status of pantyhose is changing. The key to surviving the pantyhose dilemma is knowing who you are and who you are going to be with. If you are a Believer and meeting with an UnWrapped (they believe there is never an excuse for pantyhose), it would be wise to rethink the pantyhose. If you are an Unwrapped meeting with a Believer (they believe women can’t leave the house without pantyhose), wearing pantyhose may be key to your success. CCG Readers, now you have heard  all sides of the argument! What do you think?   Yes, No, or Maybe to office pantyhose?

Consider These Risks Before Moving in with Roommates

Consider These Risks Before Moving in with Roommates All of us are likely to share our home with roommates at some point in our lives. Some people might avoid it by moving straight from their parents to living alone or with a partner. However, a lot of individuals need roommates to be able to afford to rent. Inner city areas, in particular, can have high rents that make living alone or even as a couple difficult. Your roommates might be your friends, but theyre often people you dont know. Moving in with strangers can be hard, but the important thing is that you do have somewhere to live. However, there are some risks associated with living with others. Here are some of the things you should consider and how to mitigate them. Vetting a Potential Roommate Before you move in somewhere, the landlord will always check you out. They want to know that they can trust you with their property. So they will look at your credit score and other factors to decide whether to rent to you. The thing that many tenants dont consider is that they can do the same thing. Not only can you vet your potential landlord, but you can also assess any roommates. Whether you move in with them, or they are moving in with you, you should take the time to investigate them. Not only can you speak to them face to face but you can also check out their background. For example, you can find out whether they have had past evictions. Who Is on the Lease? When you move in with roommates, its essential to consider how the lease works. You could all share a lease together, or you could have individual leases. If you have a single lease, its likely youre renting your bedroom, plus use of the common areas. It can help to protect you if any of your roommates start skipping on the rent. You shouldnt be responsible for their share of the rent, and separate leases can help with that. You also need to be wary of people moving in without signing a lease at all. If their name isnt on the lease, youll be on the hook for the rent. However, you also wont be able to get them to leave without legally evicting them. Purchases for the Property If youre teaming up with a friend to move in somewhere, you might want to buy things for the property. For example, the property might be unfurnished, and you need to get furniture. Its easy to agree to split the costs of everything you buy. However, when its time to move out and go your separate ways, who owns what? You could sell everything and split the cash between you. You could each take the pieces that you bought, or agree that you can take your favorite pieces. But there could be a conflict if you both want to keep the same items. It could be a good idea to sign a contract agreeing who will get what. Before anyone gets attached to anything, you can have a sensible discussion about what will happen. Come Up with Roommate Rules No one wants to be like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but there is something to be said for a roommate agreement. Furniture purchases arent the only thing you want to agree on. There are lots of things you need to discuss with someone you move in with. For example, you need to work out how to pay the bills. Of course, there are non-financial matters to talk about too. Cleaning can become a contentious issue with any roommates. You might also need to think about the hours that you keep. You might have different working hours or perhaps one of you is a night owl while the other is a morning person. Watch Out for Guests When you live alone, you have control over who comes into your home. However, if you live with roommates, you cant really dictate their visitors. Everyone is going to have friends and perhaps a girlfriend or boyfriend to visit now and then. The most important thing you need to watch out for is frequent overnight visitors. You might not mind boyfriends or girlfriends staying over a couple of nights a week. However, you need to be careful that they dont sneakily move in. You dont want to acquire another roommate accidentally, so you might wish to make an agreement about how often you can have guests. There might be something in your lease that sets out the rules. Dont jump into living with roommates without thinking about the important issues, especially if you dont know them. Even if you really need somewhere to live, try to take your time. Market Resume Writing Business and How to Avoid Being Ripped Off

Market Resume Writing Business and How to Avoid Being Ripped OffWith all the chaos that is trying to cover a head hunter or in market resume writing business, you can't blame them for wanting to protect themselves from scam artists and their subsequent poor performance. They'll not only get you to write a single contact letter, but they'll also ask you to provide them with dozens of references which they'll then have to send out. What the market resume writers fail to tell you is that when they get these referrals to send you some contacts, the references are not actually all of the people they will ask you to send in your CV. Why?Well, because the market resume writing business is run on contacts, and not the other way around. And in fact, the bulk of their contacts come from referrals. If you're sending in dozens of contacts by these companies, you're in for a very big surprise. This is why it's imperative that you give them numerous contacts before you get to the interview stage. Ot herwise, you may be taken aback by the degree of volume that you receive and therefore be forced to respond to hundreds of calls for references, rather than the one or two that you may have sent them. This is why it's always a good idea to do some research, do some homework and learn as much as you can about the company you're getting a reference from. Find out how many they have in total, how many there are for each area of your experience, and if they have any complaints against them. Many companies have had customers complain and have been penalized, so find out if there are any unresolved issues before you contact them for a reference. You can usually go to the Internet and look up the three main search engines to find information about these types of companies. This will help you narrow down your choices even further and it will help you avoid being taken in by poorly written pitch letters or lead.Once you have a list of the top five to ten resume writing companies, it's time to decide which market resume writing company will provide you with the best resume writing service. It's a matter of ratio, because the higher the cost of the service, the less likely they are to actually be the best. So, use this opportunity to find the top market resume writing company and get a great service. It will make your job so much easier!

How to further your engineering career - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

How to further your engineering career There may come a point in your career when you feel it’s time to move forward and explore new opportunities. Whether you want to assume management responsibilities, learn skills in a new area, or climb up the ladder, it’s important that you understand what steps you need to take to further your career. Read on for our advice on how to do this in the engineering industry. Think like a business leader As an engineer, you’ll be used to the technical aspects of your job. However, as you develop into a more senior role within engineering, you’ll need to show that you possess strong business acumen and that you can think strategically. Alongside this, you should be able to understand the financial costs associated with your projects and how this can affect business decisions. By thinking like a business leader, you’ll start to adopt a mind-set that goes beyond the day-to-day workings of your role and focuses more on the bigger picture. This will enable you to do your job more effectively and is great practise if you want to advance to more senior positions in the future. Develop in new areas With new trends constantly emerging in the market, it’s important that you’re keeping on top of what’s happening in the industry and are developing in these areas. You can stay ahead of the curve by seeking out opportunities to work on new projects and to learn new technologies. This could be done in your current workplace, by taking an online course outside of work or by tapping into your network for opportunities of peer-to-peer learning. Remember, it’s not always what you know, but who you know too. So, take advice from your industry peers and use their knowledge to fuel your own. Think outside the box To succeed in the engineering sector, you need to be innovative and have the ability to think outside the box. Doing so can help you to put forward new ideas which will paint you in a positive light with your employer and ensure overall success for the business. Alongside this, while you might specialise in a certain area, if you want to advance your career in engineering, you’ll need to have a strong understand of other disciplines within the sector. Be a team player It’s very rare in today’s world that you’ll ever work entirely on your own. The ability to work well as part of a team is a highly sought-after ability. It might sound straightforward, but consider the range of personalities you meet at work. Not everyone can get along, but being able to in a professional sense is extremely important. Support your colleagues and work harmoniously with your team to achieve great things. If possible, share your own knowledge with junior members of staff and offer them guidance. This is great management experience and shows that you’re passionate about your career. Build on your soft skills Part of being a team player is having a good set of soft skills. Strong written and verbal communication is highly valued in engineering, especially if you want to advance to a management position. You need to feel confident about giving presentations, talking to customers and working with external agencies. People skills are vital amongst senior members of staff. If you want to be successful, you should build upon your soft skills and ensure that you’re a great communicator and listener, and that you’re compassionate with your staff. In summary Overall, in order to advance your career in engineering, you’ll need to take a proactive approach and ensure that you’re thinking strategically and outside the box. Alongside this, you should develop on your soft skills, especially when it comes to working well as part of a team. By listening to our advice, you’ll be able to take the leap into the next exciting stage of your career.
